Service Description

Social Skills Groups are designed to provide children and young adults with the tools to build and maintain meaningful relationships with similarly aged peers. Groups focus on essential social/friendship-building skills with an emphasis on social thinking, perspective-taking, and the ability to adapt one’s behavior to match the surroundings. Topics covered in sessions include, but are not limited to: * Participating in conversations (e.g., turn taking, looking towards the listener, remaining on the topic) * Engaging cooperatively with peers (e.g., taking turns in games, social referencing, adhering to social norms, and responding to peers' initiations). * Pragmatic communication skills (e.g., reading and using gestures and facial expressions) * Perspective taking, flexibility, problem-solving, and negotiating with peers * Improving awareness of pop culture age-appropriate topics and interests * Recognizing bullying and how to handle it in social situations * Age-appropriate hygiene and self-care skills * Engaging with peers in a community setting such as a bowling alley, or restaurant. Groups meet once per week with peers who are similar in age and skill level. Sessions are broken down into various components: semi-structured group game and/or conversation, review of the previous session, structured lesson with the introduction of new skills, role-play or creative games to practice the skill, and social time. Group Breakdown: Elementary School Aged: Building upon foundational social skills, we introduced skills such as personal space, eye contact, social conversations, initiating/maintaining play, and sportsmanship. Middle School Aged: Building upon the skills referenced above, we introduce initiating/sustaining conversations, appropriate use of humor, assertiveness, adaptability, and flexible thinking. High School Aged: Focusing on all targeted skills mentioned above, in addition to reading nonverbal cues, conflict resolution strategies, dealing with rumors/gossip, self-monitoring, & rejection.
